ARTIST STATEMENT: YAJAIRA SALAS ORTEGA

Born on the Caribbean Island of Aruba to parents from Colombia.

Public library, art department. One of my favorite places, with an interest in all art/artist worldwide. After studying Cultural Work in Amsterdam, I enrolled at HKU, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. A very interesting year. I was less enthusiastic about the colonial mentality of some teachers. My third attempt was 3 years of studying Design in Amsterdam. I finished my final year as one of the best participants.

I call myself a Colorist, I have a plan before I start working. In the process of my work, it is the colors, drawing lines and other materials that I follow. They guide me. I can choose, so we move forward together.

What stimulates ideas is very different: reading the newspaper, a lecture, travelling, music, a poem. I work with mixed-media. Performance, Mosaic work, Installations. I took the Professional Artist course for to work at school. –Beroepskunstenaars In de Klas-. I love working with the younger generation. We get along very well.

Every day I feel blessed to have learnt Nichiren Daishonin's Japanese Buddhist philosophy. Both my Buddhist practice and my inner creative gift (= buddha nature) help me connect between my Micro Cosmos and Macro Cosmos in daily life. During my creative process, this is a Great Blessing.
